Animals - May 6, 2013
Animal Lifeline of Iowa has animals looking for their forever homes. You'll find many of them on these pages, and we're adding more every day!
ALI began as a special haven for dogs and cats who were deemed "unadoptable."
But these animals are anything but! Some of them have special needs, like medical conditions, shyness or old age. Others overcame their special needs long ago, and are as healthy and happy a pet as you'll find anywhere.
All of them are looking for homes to call their own, and every one of them deserves a chance. Please take your time browsing. On these pages, you’ll find dogs, cats, and more, all of them anxious to meet you.
If you don’t find your new pet today, please bookmark this page and check back regularly. There are always new animals arriving. We are open from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Saturday for adoptions, closed on all major holidays.

Remember, Adopters must be prepared to give lifelong love and care to the animal they adopt. The animals here at Animal Lifeline's Shelter are very important to us. It is only because we care so much about them that we are so particular about the homes we place them in. We hope that as you read the following guidelines and requirements, you will understand and share in our efforts to place these animals in the best of homes.
- Please note that the application will take between 15-30 Minutes to complete. It is very important to us that we find excellent loving homes for our animals. We hope you understand. Please print the application, complete, sign and bring it to Animal Lifeline or complete the on line version.
Cats or Dogs 7 years & older- $50.00
- All cats/kittens are spayed/neutered, current on vaccinations, Feline Leukemia & FIV tested, wormed & micro chipped.
- All dogs/puppies are spayed/neutered, current on vaccinations, heartworm tested, wormed and micro chipped.
- In addition, all adoptions include information on the care of your new pet and a free veterinary exam at selected veterinary clinics in the metro area.
-
Animals will be placed only with adults of legal age who intend to keep them as household pets. No dogs will be placed to serve merely as guard dogs or hunting dogs and no cats will be placed just to function as barn cats or mousers.
-
All animals will be placed as inside pets only.
-
Applicants wishing to adopt cats/kittens must be willing to consider alternatives to declawing.
-
Puppies and kittens under 16 weeks of age will not be placed in homes where there are children under six (6) years of age. Health and humane authorities agree that a young child usually cannot be expected to handle a puppy or kitten properly. Mishandling is likely to result in injury to the animal, the child or both.
-
No animal will be released for adoption as a gift to another person. The recipient may not want an animal, the animal may not be suitable for the recipient’s life style or the recipient may not meet the criteria for a responsible pet owner. Animal Lifeline will issue “Gift Certificates” that may be redeemed by the recipient, but Animal Lifeline reserves the right to refuse adoption to any person that fails to meet the criteria for a responsible pet owner.
-
Because of the potential for abandonment, students are carefully screened and counseled before being approved for pet adoption.
-
If the applicant rents, written permission from the landlord is required before the adoption application is approved. This is for the protection of the animal and the adopter.
-
No animal adopted from Animal Lifeline of Iowa may be sold or given away to another person. If the adopter can no longer keep the animal, for whatever reason, it must be returned to Animal Lifeline of Iowa.
-
All adopters are required to fit their new pets with properly fitting collars (with an elastic insert or breakaway collar for cats) bearing a permanent tag with the owner’s name, address and phone. All dogs are released from the shelter with a temporary tag bearing Animal Lifeline’s name and phone. In addition, all animals are micro chipped before adoption.
-
Serious consideration is given to the adopter’s ability to provide adequate exercise for a dog. Fenced yards are preferred. Consideration will be given IF the adopter is able to provide adequate exercise for the dog without a fenced area.
-
Animal Lifeline may conduct a Pre and Post-Adoption home visit. Adopter’s identity will be confirmed by a current driver’s license at the time of the adoption.
-
A free Post-Adoption physical and stool check is offered to adopters by one of several Metro area veterinarians. We highly recommend you take advantage of this offer.
-
ADOPTION APPROVAL REQUIREMENTS
-
If you currently own pets, you must provide a current veterinarian reference of proper vaccinations and sterilizations before an adoption can be approved.
-
You must have a home telephone or cellular telephone in your name.
-
We reserve the right to refuse adoption to anyone.
-
All adoption decisions are final.
