Bethany was found on the shoulder of I-35 and she is a very lucky girl, as someone saw her lying there and stopped.  It was obvious that she had a leg injury so the kind soul loaded her up in his truck and took her home where she spent the night before coming to us. Full body x-rays showed that both her front legs were fractured, one with 6 breaks and one leg with 3.  It took two surgeries, both 4 hours in length to repair the legs.  Bethany is a really trooper though and is eating on her own already and while we know it will be a slow recovery, she is doing remarkable well.  She is a very sweet dog and appears very calm.
Update December 29:  Bethany is up and walking short distances.
Update January 24, 2008:  Bethany is walking a little further each day and last week one of the pins in her right leg was removed.  She must be feeling better as her eyes are brighter and she really wants to "hang out" with the humans now.  The Dr.'s tell us that she is not out of the woods yet, but we are cautiously optimistic that she will make a full recovery.  What spirit this girl has.
UPDATE FEBRUARY 8, 2008-Bethany had a fantastic check-up at the Vet today and the fixature on her right leg was removed and one of the fixatures on her left leg was removed.  Both of her legs are healing well and now we will begin letting her walk more and will do range of motion exercises on her right leg twice daily.  She is walking a little "gingerly" but it is just awesome to see her walking at all.  She has her next check-up, more x-rays and will be spayed in 3 weeks.
UPDATE FEBRUARY 26, 2008 - Bethany had a wonderful visit at the vet.  The x-rays on her left leg showed that the healing was progressing well and the last fixature was removed today and she was spayed as well.  She is a happy girl right now and is so glad that she doesn't have to wear that e-collar (lampshade).  She still has about two weeks of rehabilitation and one more visit to the vet before she can be adopted.
We have several applications and will be selecting a great family for Bethany to call her own.

We are looking for sponsors to help with cost of her surgeries and rehabilitation. If you would like to contribute, please mail your contribution to ALI, Attn: Bethany, PO Box 12, Carlisle, IA 50047 or click here to make a donation through Pay Pal.
